Scope and Content Benriach-Glenlivet Distillery, Morayshire This Scotch Malt Whisky distillery was built in 1898, and acquired in the same year by the Longmorn-Glenlivet Distilleries Ltd. Benriach closed in 1900, and did not reopen until 1965, when it was rebuilt by the Glenlivet Distilleries Ltd. This view shows the base of the malt kiln. A peat fire is burning in the grate in the centre. The doors below and to the side of the firedoors can be used to control the heat reaching the drying malt, spread on a perforated floor above the fire. Note the peat stack to the left. Peat burned in the kiln in the early stages of the drying of the malt gives it a smoky flavour. The floor maltings at Benriach supplied both the distillery itself, and the nearby Longmorn distillery.
