Scope and Content Montrose Bridge, Angus This bridge was built to replace a famous early suspension bridge over the river South Esk, and because of public concern was designed to resemble in profile a suspension bridge, though it is a reinforced concrete cantilever structure. This view shows the bridge from the north east. The suspension-bridge profile is obvious, but the diagonal bracing makes it clear that it is not using the suspension principle. It was designed by Sir E Owen Williams. During the 1920s engineers experimented with a wide range of designs for reinforced-concrete bridges. This was one of the more unusual, and was not repeated. It is now showing signs of age, and may be replaced. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
