Scope and Content Cadzow Bridge, Hamilton, Lanarkshire This bridge was originally constructed in 1836 over the valley of a small burn as an improved route through Hamilton for coaches using the Glasgow to Carlisle road. It was widened in 1900-03 to accommodate a route of the Lanarkshire Tramways Co. This view shows the bridge from the north east, with its three flat segmental arches and level carriageway. The outer faces were remodelled as part of the widening, with a treatment recalling the Dean Bridge, Edinburgh. The parapet details are modelled on the work of Otto Wagner, a German architect of the turn of the century. In the late 1990s the park to the north of the bridge was extensively remodelled as part of a major scheme of civic improvement. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
