Scope and Content Allanton Brick, Tile and Fireclay Works, Morningside, Lanarkshire This was a large heavy ceramics works, owned by Loudon and Russell, which latterly specialised in making salt-glazed sewer pipes. It had in 1977 eight round and four rectangular downdraught kilns, all oil-fired. This view shows a group of three circular downdraught kilns, with the square-section chimney which provided the draught for them. The oil for firing them came from the tank on the left. The building behind housed the pipe presses. The works was purchased by the Hepworth Group, closed in 1977, and demolished in 1979. It was the last of a number of Scottish works making salt-glazed fireclay pipes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
