Scope and Content Stillhouse, Deanston Distillery, Perthshire Deanston Distillery was converted in 1965 from the former Deanston Cotton Mill. by the Deanston Distillery Co Ltd, a subsidiary of James Finlay and Co Ltd, who had owned the cotton mill. It was bought in 1972 by Invergordon Distillers (Holdings) Ltd. This view shows the interior of the stillhouse, which was created out of the lower part of the spinning mill constructed in about 1827 to increase production. There are four stills, the two wash stills and one of the spirit stills visible here. The wash stills are used for the first stage in converting fermented malt liquor - wash - into the spirit which when matured will become Scotch Whisky. The produce of these stills - low wines - is further concentrated in the spirit stills. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
