Scope and Content Power station, Deanston Distillery, Perthshire Deanston Distillery was converted in 1965 from the former Deanston Cotton Mill. The power station was built c1827 as a house for the large waterwheels which powered the mills. The adaptation of the water supply to generate electricity began in 1926. This view shows a Gilkes turbine of c1947, with the generator to the right. The water to drive the turbine comes down through the concrete casing from the wrought-iron launder which fed the original waterwheels. This was one of the largest sets of waterwheels in Scotland. The wheels were taken out in about 1947. The water is taken from the river Teith. The availability of plenty of water and cheap electricity were important reasons for the distillery conversion.
