It was the first purpose-built works of its kind in Britain, and was designed in Germany. This view shows part of the plateworking shop, with a punching and shearing machine, seen from the punching end. The shearing head is on the right. Such machines were rare by the late 1970s. This works latterly built slow-speed diesel engines designed in Switzerland by Sulzer. It stopped making such engines in 1978, and was adapted for making guided missiles, and overhauling naval guns.
