Scope and Content North British Diesel Engine Works, South Street, Glasgow This large engine works was built for the manufacture of marine diesel engines, by Barclay, Curle and Co, owners of two nearby shipyards. It was the first purpose-built works of its kind in Britain, and was designed in Germany. This view shows a piston for a large slow-speed diesel engine. Its size gives an idea of the scale of such engines. On the left is the lower part of an engine, with doors to allow inspection of the engine's crankshaft and connecting rods. This works latterly built slow-speed diesel engines designed in Switzerland by Sulzer. It stopped making such engines in 1978, and was adapted for making guided missiles, and overhauling naval guns.
