Scope and Content North British Diesel Engine Works, South Street, Glasgow This large engine works was built for the manufacture of marine diesel engines, by Barclay, Curle and Co, owners of two nearby shipyards. It was the first purpose-built works of its kind in Britain, and was designed in Germany. This view shows a hydraulic brake linked to the crankshaft of a slow-speed diesel engine for testing the latter. This device simulated the effect of driving a ship's propeller, allowing the engine to be run at full power in the workshop. This works latterly built slow-speed diesel engines designed in Switzerland by Sulzer. It stopped making such engines in 1978, and was adapted for making guided missiles, and overhauling naval guns.
