Scope and Content North British Diesel Engine Works, South Street, Glasgow This large engine works was built for the manufacture of marine diesel engines, by Barclay, Curle and Co, owners of two nearby shipyards. It was the first purpose-built works of its kind in Britain, and was designed in Germany. This view shows a large slow-speed diesel engine complete and being arranged for test running. The engine had six cylinders. Note the cranes designed to run along the side of the workshop, a typical early 20th century design feature. This works latterly built slow-speed diesel engines designed in Switzerland by Sulzer. It stopped making such engines in 1978, and was adapted for making guided missiles, and overhauling naval guns.
