Scope and Content North British Diesel Engine Works, South Street, Glasgow This large engine works was built for the manufacture of marine diesel engines, by Barclay, Curle and Co, owners of two nearby shipyards. It was the first purpose-built works of its kind in Britain, and was designed in Germany. This view shows the central engine-erecting bay, with a large slow-speed diesel engine being assembled. The great height of the building was needed to allow the overhead cranes to place components on top of such large engines. This works latterly built slow-speed diesel engines designed in Switzerland by Sulzer. It stopped making such engines in 1978, and was adapted for making guided missiles, and overhauling naval guns. Now used as a store by Scottish Opera. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
