Scope and Content North British Diesel Engine Works, South Street, Glasgow This large engine works was built for the manufacture of marine diesel engines, by Barclay, Curle and Co, owners of two nearby shipyards. It was the first purpose-built works of its kind in Britain, and was designed in Germany. This view shows one of the machine bays flanking the central engine-erecting bay. On the right a valve for a large diesel engine is being machined on a lathe. The shop is much lighter than most, because of the side glazing. This works latterly built slow-speed diesel engines designed in Switzerland by Sulzer. It stopped making such engines in 1978, and was adapted for making guided missiles, and overhauling naval guns.
