Scope and Content Cardowan Colliery, Stepps, Lanarkshire This three-shaft colliery was sunk c1924 and modernised by the National Coal Board in the post-war period, when the third shaft was sunk. The two original shafts were latterly used for man winding, and the third shaft for coal winding. This view shows the pumps which drew methane from holes bored in the rock above the coal seam. This had the dual purpose of making the working of the coal safer and providing fuel for the colliery boilers. This colliery was kept working because it produced coking coal, used in the coke ovens at Clyde Iron Works and at Ravenscraig. It closed in the mid 1980s. One of the winding engines was saved, and is now at Summerlee Industrial Museum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
