Description Cardowan Colliery View of Murray and Paterson winding engine

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 517018

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Cardowan Colliery, Stepps, Lanarkshire This three-shaft colliery was sunk c1924 and modernised by the National Coal Board in the post-war period, when the third shaft was sunk. The two original shafts were latterly used for man winding, and the third shaft for coal winding. This view shows one of the steam winding engines installed in 1924, and made by Murray and Paterson of Coatbridge. The welded steel winding drum is probably a replacement. Note the brake cylinder above the drum, with the brake shoes on either side. This colliery was kept working because it produced coking coal, used in the coke ovens at Clyde Iron Works and at Ravenscraig. It closed in the mid 1980s. One of the winding engines was saved, and is now at Summerlee Industrial Museum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
