Scope and Content Cardowan Colliery, Stepps, Lanarkshire This three-shaft colliery was sunk c1924 and modernised by the National Coal Board in the post-war period, when the third shaft was sunk. The two original shafts were latterly used for man winding, and the third shaft for coal winding. This view shows one of the two steam winding engines installed in 1924. These were made by Murray and Paterson of Coatbridge. In this view one of the two cylinders is in the foreground, with the winding drum at the rear. This colliery was kept working because it produced coking coal, used in the coke ovens at Clyde Iron Works and at Ravenscraig. It closed in the mid 1980s. One of the winding engines was saved, and is now at Summerlee Industrial Museum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
