Description Rothesay Gasworks View of retort house

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 516583

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Rothesay Gas Works, Buteshire This was a medium-sized coal-gas works, built with horizontal retorts in the 19th century, but rebuilt with vertical retorts, probably in the interwar period. Rothesay is a small town in winter, but its population swelled dramatically in the summer. This view shows the vertical retort house from the entrance road. Note that the building has an exposed steel frame, with brick infill. This construction was common for vertical-retort houses. Note also the coal-hoist projecting on the left. In common with most other works of this type, Rothesay had closed by 1978, though the works was still largely intact. It has since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
