Scope and Content The West Tower and Entrance Porch, Corstorphine Old Parish Church, Corstorphine, Edinburgh Corstorphine Old Parish Church dates from the early 15th century, and became a collegiate church in 1429, founded by Sir John Forrester. It stands, surrounded by its churchyard, in Kirk Loan, at the historic centre of the old village of Corstorphine. The squat west tower, detached from the west gable of the nave, dates from 1444. It carries an octagonal stone spire with three crenellated bands and pinnacles at the corners. The porch, the main entrance to the church, was added to the tower in 1646. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the entrance porch to the church was the dreaded 'place of repentance' where sinners confessed. It was also the 'court' where trials for witchcraft were held until the Act of King James I was repealed in 1735. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
