Scope and Content Glenruthven Mills, Auchterarder, Perthshire This was a power-loom weaving factory, latterly making high-quality shirtings and tie cloths Until it closed in the mid 1980s it was still driven by a steam engine, and it was the last steam-driven factory of any kind in Scotland. This view shows two of the narrow looms, of 19th century design, belt driven from an overhead lineshaft, as were almost all the machines in the factory. These looms could weave simple patterns: checks and stripes. The works survived by selling limited-production cloths to London tailors. Much of their output was mixed cotton and woollen cloth. Changes in fashion and foreign competition forced closure, but the steam engine and boiler have been retained in situ. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
