Scope and Content Ochiltree Tile Works, Ayrshire This works was built to make agricultural drainage tiles, which it continued to do until closure in 1982. The kilns latterly used were both downdraught, one rectangular (1961) and the other round !1968), replacing inefficient updraught kilns. This view shows the arrangement of the works, with the kilns, chimney and little office grouped in the angle of the L-plan range of drying sheds. The chimney, cooling tower and headgear in the right background were at the Barony Colliery and Power Station This was the last drainage-tile works to operate in lowland Scotland. It was demolished immediately after closure in 1982. Clay drainage tiles were supplanted by perforated plastic pipes, which were easier to lay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
