Scope and Content Ochiltree Tile Works, Ayrshire This works was built to make agricultural drainage tiles, which it continued to do until closure in 1982. The kilns latterly used were both downdraught, one rectangular (1961) and the other round !1968), replacing inefficient updraught kilns. This view inside the drying shed shows the long racks of drying tiles, with open louvres to the right. The spaces between the racks were wide enough for the pipe extruding machine to move along, to minimise the labour involved in stacking the tiles. This was the last drainage-tile works to operate in lowland Scotland. It was demolished immediately after closure in 1982. Clay drainage tiles were supplanted by perforated plastic pipes, which were easier to lay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
