Scope and Content Ochiltree Tile Works, Ayrshire This works was built to make agricultural drainage tiles, which it continued to do until closure in 1982. The kilns latterly used were both downdraught, one rectangular (1961) and the other round !1968), replacing inefficient updraught kilns. This view inside the drying shed shows the pug mill, a device which mixes raw clay with water until it is of the right consistency for making tiles. It also removes air bubbles from the clay. In this view a clay slab is emerging from the mill. This was the last drainage-tile works to operate in lowland Scotland. It was demolished immediately after closure in 1982. Clay drainage tiles were supplanted by perforated plastic pipes, which were easier to lay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
