Scope and Content Ochiltree Tile Works, Ayrshire This works was built to make agricultural drainage tiles, which it continued to do until closure in 1982. The kilns latterly used were both downdraught, one rectangular (1961) and the other round !1968), replacing inefficient updraught kilns. This view inside the drying shed shows a length of tile section being extruded through a die on the front of the machine. When enough tile section has been extruded it will be cut into pieces by the stretched wires seen here. This was the last drainage-tile works to operate in lowland Scotland. It was demolished immediately after closure in 1982. Clay drainage tiles were supplanted by perforated plastic pipes, which were easier to lay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
