Scope and Content Ochiltree Tile Works, Ayrshire This works was built to make agricultural drainage tiles, which it continued to do until closure in 1982. The kilns latterly used were both downdraught, one rectangular (1961) and the other round !1968), replacing inefficient updraught kilns. This view shows the round downdraught kiln, with two of its fireholes visible. Note that the kiln is set in a pit, to minimise the effect of wind on the rate of burning of the fuel. The body of the kiln is cased in steel for additional strength. This was the last drainage-tile works to operate in lowland Scotland. It was demolished immediately after closure in 1982. Clay drainage tiles were supplanted by perforated plastic pipes, which were easier to lay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
