Scope and Content Former Clydebank Shipbuilding Yard, Dunbartonshire This yard was founded in 1870 by J and G Thomson, who transferred the name from a smaller yard in Glasgow. It became one of the largest shipbuilding yards in Britain, and was acquired in 1899 by John Brown and Co of Sheffield. This view shows the yard from the north east. The sheds to the left housed the blacksmiths' shop. The cranes served the building berths, the lighter ones dating from the inter-war years, and the heavier ones from the 1950s and 60s. The yard became part of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in the 1960s, and when that company was liquidated in the early 1970s it was sold to the American Marathon Manufacturing Company, who used it for building oil exploration rigs.
