Scope and Content Singer Sewing Machine Factory, Kilbowie Road, Clydebank, Dunbartonshire This factory was transferred from Bridgeton, Glasgow to a canal-side site, in 1882, and quickly became the largest sewing-machine factory in the world. There were two sections, one making domestic, and the other industrial, sewing machines. This view shows an older part of the Industrial Department, with lines of machines driven by belts from long overhead shafts. Some of these machines were transferred from the Bridgeton factory in 1882. The works closed soon after this photograph was taken, and the buildings were demolished. The site is now a business park. The Singer company introduced mass-production into Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
