Scope and Content Singer Sewing Machine Factory, Kilbowie Road, Clydebank, Dunbartonshire This factory was transferred from Bridgeton, Glasgow to a canal-side site, in 1882, and quickly became the largest sewing-machine factory in the world. There were two sections, one making domestic, and the other industrial, sewing machines. This view shows a ceiling-mounted motor driving a lineshaft to power a group of machines. Note the overhead power supply to this motor, and the reinforced concrete construction of the building. The works closed soon after this photograph was taken, and the buildings were demolished. The site is now a business park. The Singer company introduced mass-production into Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
