Scope and Content Singer Sewing Machine Factory, Kilbowie Road, Clydebank, Dunbartonshire This factory was transferred from Bridgeton, Glasgow to a canal-side site, in 1882, and quickly became the largest sewing-machine factory in the world. There were two sections, one making domestic, and the other industrial, sewing machines. This view shows a horizontal milling machine, one of a group of belt-driven machine tools in the Industrial Department. This group was driven by a ceiling-mounted electric motor. Each machine was set up to perform one machining operation. The works closed soon after this photograph was taken, and the buildings were demolished. The site is now a business park. The Singer company introduced mass-production into Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
