Scope and Content Bridge Inn, Ratho, Midlothian This building was constructed as a canal-side inn, probably originally as a change-house for the horses pulling the fast packet-boats on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal. By 1978 it had become a base for a restaurant boat on the canal. This view shows the inn from the south west, with the first of a number of extensions to the rear. On the left is a standard Union Canal overbridge. The vessel is the Pride of the Union restaurant boat. This vessel was the first craft to operate commercially on the Union Canal since the 1930s, and its introduction marked the beginning of the revival of the lowland canals in Scotland. The inn is now known as the Edinburgh Canal Centre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
