Description Garscube Bridge General View

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 512600

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Bridge over river Kelvin, Garscube Estate, Lanarkshire This is an estate bridge connecting the site of the former Garscube House (demolished) with drives leading to Maryhill Road. The bridge has four flat Tudor-arched spans, and a level carriageway. This view shows the bridge from the south. Note the elaboration of the piers, arch stones and parapet. The square-section balusters are typical of the late 16th and 17th centuries. The treatment off the cutwaters is most unusual. The architectural treatment of this bridge reflects the popularity of the Tudor and Jacobean styles for the design of country houses and associated buildings until the Scottish Baronial came into vogue in the late1840s.
