Scope and Content Detail of the cornice in the former dining room, No 22 Royal Circus, Edinburgh Royal Circus, designed by William Playfair in 1820 based on an original plan by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1801-2, was built as two sweeping crescents on opposite sides of a great circle, cut diagonally by a road running downhill to Stockbridge. This elaborate plasterwork cornice, the decorative border in the angle between the wall and the ceiling, has Greek motifs and the popular 'egg-and-dart' mouldings. By the 1820s the decoration of the ceiling was more usually confined to the cornice and to a central rose or medallion. It became fashionable to use heavy, Classical motifs based on Greek or Roman architecture for the running ornament of cornices. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
