Scope and Content Visit by Harold Wilson, the then Prime Minister, to Jamaica Street, Edinburgh in 1965 Jamaica Street, built in 1807-19 in a shallow site between Heriot Row and the already projected Royal Circus, was the only substantial development of workers' housing in the northern New Town. The street was almost totally demolished in the 1960s. Harold Wilson, Prime Minister in 1965, along with the Housing Committee Chairman, visits Jamaica Street and meets some of the residents after a clearance order was approved by Edinburgh Town Council in 1964 to demolish the street. By 1850 the street had become overcrowded and had no water closets or sewers. A century later, it earned the distinction of being the most notorious street in Edinburgh. The buildings deteriorated to such a squalid state that most were demolished in 1967. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
