Scope and Content Jamaica Street, Edinburgh just prior to demolition Jamaica Street, built in 1807-19 in a shallow site between Heriot Row and the already projected Royal Circus, was the only substantial development of workers' housing in the northern New Town. The street was almost totally demolished in the 1960s. This photograph, taken from India Street, shows the street, originally built as two long rows of ashlar-fronted tenements, in a state of deterioration and decay. It was demolished in October 1967. Jamaica Street, like Rose Street and Thistle Street in the first New Town, was originally planned for the 'better class of artisans' but by 1850 it had become overcrowded and, with no water-closets or sewers, a potential source of serious infection.
