Scope and Content Former coach-houses, Northumberland Street Lane, Edinburgh Northumberland Street Lane, a narrow cobbled mews lane running behind Northumberland Street, was built in the early 19th century for coach-houses and stables, and to provide accommodation for the stable-hands and cow-keepers. This row of coach-houses, built along the mews lane, provided accommodation for the residents of Northumberland Street to store their carriages and stable their horses. The stable-hands lived on the upper floor. A contract, drawn up in 1806 to regulate building in the northern New Town, stipulated that the lanes were to be used for 'stables, and coach-houses, or washing-houses, or other offices for the use of the occupiers of the front tenements alone'.
