Scope and Content William Playfair's design for St Stephen's Church, Edinburgh St Stephen's Church, at the north end of St Vincent Street, was designed by William Henry Playfair in 1826 and completed in 1828. Described as 'of vast scale, Baroque power and Grecian severity', it is square in plan and set diagonally to suit the site. The church has an octagonal interior, with triangular stairwells in the east and west corners, and a ceiling sloping up to a central lantern. The main entrance opens into a gallery, supported by columns, and below there are five tunnel-vaulted cellars. The architect, William Henry Playfair (1789-1857), designed many of Edinburgh's Classical buildings, often on dramatic sites, including the Royal Scottish Academy and National Gallery on The Mound, and the National Monument on Calton Hill.
