Description Leven, Methil Power Station General View

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 512034

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Methil Power Station, Fife This power station was built when the Fife coalfield was the most active in Scotland. It was designed to burn low-grade fine slurry from the washery at the former Wellesley Colliery, which processed coal from the large Michael and other pits. This view shows the station from the east, with its clean design evident. Th offices are in the front, with the turbine hall behind. The tall range is the boiler house, with the fuel stockyard behind. The chimney is made of reinforced concrete. The architectural treatment of this complex was by Stanley Ross-Smith, Edinburgh. Though much more modest in scale than the other coal-fired power station of the period it has a notable presence. It is due to close in 2000. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
