Scope and Content Kirkcaldy Gas Works, Fife This was a coal gas works founded in 1837 to supply gas to the town of Kirkcaldy. It had been closed for some years by 1977, and the site had largely been cleared. A large waterless gas-holder on the edge of the site was still in use. This view shows one of a pair of bell-shaped cast iron projections flanking the main entrance to the works, inscribed GAS WORKS 1867. These were installed to protect the masonry of the gatepiers from damage by cart wheels. This works was a large one, and there would have been much cart traffic associated with it. Cart wheel protectors were not unusual, but the shape and inscription on this pair were very unusual. This site has now been cleared and redeveloped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
