Scope and Content Remains of derrick crane, Kinghorn Harbour, Fife Kinghorn Harbour was probably formed in the 18th century, with a series of quays round a small bay, and an east breakwater pier. This pier had disintegrated by 1977, but the quays had recently been repaired. This crane was probably on one of the quays. This view shows what was left of the crane, lying on the remains of the east pier. This is the upright, swivelling, section of a derrick crane. The jib would have been pivoted at the right-hand end (bottom) and there would have been stays at the top. This type of crane was invented in Glasgow in the mid 19th century, and became known as the 'Scotch Derrick'. This one was made by Carrick and Ritchie, Edinburgh.. It was hand operated, with gearing for hoisting, and for raising and lowering the jib. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
