Forth and Clyde Canal, Hungryside Bridge General View

SC 511254

Description Forth and Clyde Canal, Hungryside Bridge General View

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 511254

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Hungryside Bridge, near Torrance, Lanarkshire This was one of four road bridges on the Forth and Clyde Canal which were built or rebuilt as electrically-operated bascule bridges in the mid 1930s. This one probably replaced one of the original hand-operated bascule bridges. This view shows the bridge from the north east. It has a plate-girder span, and reinforced concrete abutments clad in sandstone. On the left are the remains of the control cabin. The canal closed to navigation at the end of 1962, and these bridges fell out of use, their control cabins becoming derelict. Three of the spans survive: here, at Lambhill and at Temple. The fourth, at Cloberhill was eliminated by road widening. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
