Catalogue Number SC 511247

Scope and Content Former canal stables, Glasgow Road Bridge, near Kirkintilloch, Lanarkshire This was one of a series of stables built by the Company of Proprietors of the Forth and Clyde Canal to provide relays of horses for a service of fast boats between Glasgow and Lock 16 at Falkirk, where connection was made with the Union Canal. This view shows the shell of the building from the south east. The building incorporated stables, a hayloft and a house for the keeper. Note the classical treatment: these were prestigious buildings. After lying derelict for many years this building was revived as the Stables Inn, and is now a popular canal-side pub/restaurant. There were similar buildings at Lambhill, Shirva and Craigmarloch.
