Inverness, Waterloo Place, Grain and Hay Store General View

SC 511129

Description Inverness, Waterloo Place, Grain and Hay Store General View

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 511129

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Grain and hay store, Glebe Street and Chapel Street, Inverness, Inverness-shire This was a particularly attractive example of a type of building often found in market towns. It had a two-storey and attic front building, with single-storey blocks to the rear. The building belonged to Fraser and McColl. This view shows the building from the west. Note the alternate slating on the front range, which ventilated the upper floor, and the ogee-roofed louvred ventilator, which performed the same function. Businesses like this originally supplied grain and hay to people who kept horses in towns. As this business declined they diversified, but often in vain. This store has now been converted to other uses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
