Scope and Content Ness Viaduct, Inverness, Inverness-shire This masonry viaduct was built for the Inverness and Ross-shire Railway, and designed by Joseph Mitchell. It had five main segmental arched spans, a single plate girder approach span at the north end, and five approach spans at the south. This view shows the main spans of the bridge from the south west, with the harbour in the background. The masonry is of exceptional quality. Despite its apparent solidity, most of this viaduct collapsed in flood conditions in 1989. The main spans have been replaced by three steel and concrete spans, though the original approach spans have been retained. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
