Inverness, Thornbush Quay, Sheerlegs General View

SC 511115

Description Inverness, Thornbush Quay, Sheerlegs General View

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 511115

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Sheer legs, Thornbush, Inverness, Inverness-shire This device was an early form of heavy lifting mechanism, much used in shipbuilding in the 19th century. This example was, however built in 1940 for the Inverness Harbour Trustees. It was capable of lifting 24 tons. This view shows the sheerlegs from the north, with the double hook of the hoist visible between the legs. A screw at the bottom of the rear leg of the device was used to move the front legs, and hence the hook, over the edge of the quay. This is the last sheer-legs in Scotland. It was probably built for war work on vessels using the harbour and the adjacent Thornbush Slipway, which was used for ship repair. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
