SC 510328

Description Craleckan Ironworks, Furnace General View

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 510328

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Argyll Furnace (Craleckan Ironworks), Furnace, Loch Fyne, Argyll This is the furnace of an ironworks established in 1755 to smelt imported iron ore with charcoal made from local woodland. The works closed in 1812, but the remains of the furnace are still well-preserved. This view shows the furnace from the north east. The furnace stack is on the left, with the casting house to the right. The scaffolding was for repairs. Note the substantial granite construction. This furnace was partly repaired by the Ancient Monuments Division of the Scottish Development Department in the early 1970s. It is the best-preserved charcoal blast-furnace in Britain, with its lining intact. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
