Scope and Content Gas-holder station, Holyrood Road, Edinburgh This gas-holder station was built to store gas made in the Canongate Gas Works, which was on the north side of the Canongate. That works closed when Granton Gas Works opened c1900, but the holder station was retained to serve the Old Town. This view shows the station from the north, with one of the two holders in the empty position. To the right is the meter house. The holders here had deep ashlar-lined pits, filled with water, in which the circular tank rose and fell. This station had closed by 1977. It has since been demolished and the site redeveloped.
