Scope and Content Kelvin Viaduct, Maryhill, Glasgow This is in fact two viaducts, with a small space between them. The older one was built for the Glasgow, Dumbarton and Helensburgh Railway, opened in 1858. The second one may have been built when the Dawsholm Gas Works was built in 1871-2. This view shows the viaducts from the east, with the older viaduct in front. It is of masonry construction. Note the projecting stones at the springing of the arches, which supported the timber formers (centring) on which the arch rings were constructed. The second viaduct, to the rear, has masonry piers, but a brick superstructure. This railway was initially the only route by which coal could be brought to the gas works, and this probably accounts for the doubling of the line. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
