Scope and Content Slotting machine, Alpha Works, Motherwell, Lanarkshire The Alpha Works belonged to George Russell and Co, a firm that specialised in crane building. By 1977 it was operating on a much-reduced scale. This was the only machine tool of any antiquity surviving. This view shows the slotting machine in a corner of the works. It is a belt-driven machine, as can be seen by the belt pulley to the right. It was built by William Muir and Co, Manchester, their works number 188. Slotting machines were used for cutting slots in machine parts, and for machining small flat surfaces. In the later 19th century all engineering shops of any pretensions had at least on of these machines. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
