Scope and Content Atholl District Laundry, Pitlochry, Perthshire This was a good example of the mechanised laundries that became popular from the 1880s, when laundry machines were developed. This one served the holiday resort of Pitlochry with its many hotels and boarding houses. This view shows the laundry from the south east. There were three parallel ranges of workshops, the two to the rear being timber-clad. The middle one had prominent timber-clad roof-ridge ventilators. The advertising on the chimney was unusual. Laundries like this were badly hit by the ready availability of domestic washing machines, as a large part of their trade was with private households. This one had closed by 1976, and has now been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
