Scope and Content Upper Mill, Barry, Angus This was a water-powered corn mill, rebuilt in the late 19th century. It is on an L-plan, with a D-plan kiln. It has two pairs of stones, and is driven by an overshot waterwheel 0.96 by 4.77m in a lean-to wheelhouse. This view shows the construction of the waterwheel, which has a cast iron axle, hubs and rings, wrought-iron spokes and cross-braces, and wooden buckets. This mill was still in commercial use in 1976, making oatmeal. It has since been taken over by the National Trust for Scotland, and adapted to receive visitors. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
