Scope and Content Limekilns, The Airde, Shinness, Sutherland This block of three single-draw limekilns was built for the Duke of Sutherland to supply lime to sweeten the acid soils of the land he was improving in east Sutherland. It is situated on the shores of Loch Shin, probably used for shipping lime. This view shows the kilns from the south. The right-hand one has collapsed, as has part of the linings of the other two. The ramp for taking limestone and coal to the kiln top can be seen on the right. The improvement of the east Sutherland estate was one of the largest schemes of its kind carried out in the late 19th century. The coal to burn the lime would have come from the Duke's own colliery at Brora, on the coast. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
