Longhill Mill View from SW showing waterwheel

SC 508574

Description Longhill Mill View from SW showing waterwheel

Date 23/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 508574

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Longhill Mill, Urquhart, Morayshire This was a very fine water-powered corn mill, largely rebuilt in 1891, and still in excellent condition in 1976, having worked until 1972. It was driven by an overshot waterwheel 1.40 by 3.66m, and had three pairs of stones, mounted in line. This view shows the waterwheel from the south west, with the wooden launder taking water to it running in from the right. Note the iron rod running up to a small opening in the mill wall. This operated a trap-door in the launder, to stop the wheel. This was probably the last watermill to work commercially in Moray. It has since been converted into a dwelling house.
